2009 College Baseball Opening Day
February 21st 2009 01:09
A windy and chilly Friday in North Carolina didn't stop the college baseball season from kicking off its season. All across the country teams were playing their season openers, including Rival.com's numbers one ranked North Carolina Tar Heels.
North Carolina and preseason All-American pitcher Alex White dominated Virginia Military, 13-3, in the opener of the newly renovated Bryson Field at Boshamer Stadium. White struk out nine in five innings pitched, but surprisingly didn't dominate Virgina Military. He allowed three earned runs on eight hits, including a home run in the fourth inning by first baseman Jordan Ballard. White's fastball was around 95, but he was leaving his off-speed pitches over the plate, which was the reason for most of the hits he allowed.
Virginia Military was staying with the top ranked team unil the Tar Heels scored six runs in the fifth inning to extend their lead to 10-3. Preseason All-American first basemen Dustin Ackley went 3-for-4 with an RBI.
Earlier in the day, Santa Clara defeated Xavier, 3-0, in the Summit Hospitality Invitational on the campus of North Carolina State. The game was a pitcher's dual until the seventh inning when Santa Clara junior Geoff Klein doubled to left scoring Kyle Van Dusen, Juan Parra and Tommy Medina. The Broncos had plenty of opportunities to get on the scoreboard but they left runners in scoring position in the second, fourth, fifth and six inning. Santa Clara junior pitcher Nate Garcia pitched seven shutout including, allowing three hits and striking out eight batters. He mixed up his pitches and effectively changed speeds. He is somebody that we should track this season to see if he could possibly get drafted in June. Preseason All-Atlantic 10 Xavier pitcher Danny Rosenbaum tossed six shutout innings, allowing four hits and striking out two.
