Astros Struggle; AL Strong In Interleague
June 19th 2008 13:40
If any team is playing their way out of the playoff race it's the Astros. They have lost 16 of the last 19, including their seventh straight game Wednesday night when they lost 2-1 to the Orioles.
Pitching has been the primary reason for the losing streak. They have allowed 6-plus runs in five of the last seven games. The only bright spot has been Lance Berkman. He hit his 20th home run Wednesday night and is batting .362 with 58 RBIs. He is carrying this team on his back. This is the time the Astros need to turn the season around because the Cardinals don't have Albert Pujols and the Cubs are without Alfonso Soriano.
The American League has continued its dominance over the National League. Wednesday night the American League went 8-6 after the Rays defeated the Cubs and the Red Sox defeated the Phillies in the two marquee matchups of the week. Cubs pitcher Carlos Zambrano left the game in the seventh inning after feeling tightness in his shoulder. Red Sox outfielder J.D. Drew continued his hot-hitting wih a three-run home run in the first inning and improved his batting average to a major league-best .441 in June. The American League is 67-48 in interleague games this season.
