Baseball 101

April 30th 2008 03:56
Simple Baseball 101: Teams that commit errors will lose games. The two teams that committed the most errors this season are a combined 19-33. They are the Pirates and Rangers. Both teams don't have great pitching staffs so this stat just makes things worse. Tonight was a perfect example. Mets' David Wright hit into a routine double play in the 4th inning but Freddy Sanchez bobbled the flip from Chris Gomez, causing everybody to be safe and a run scored. Ian Snell walked the next batter, Carlos Beltran, and had to be relieved by Damaso Marte, who was able to get out of the inning. Most of the time that doesn't happen because teams at this level make you pay for mistakes.

Red Sox's Dustin Pedroia made an outstanding play in the 9th inning when he robbed Blue Jays' Vernon Wells of a hit and prevented the go-ahead run from scoring. Kevin Youkilis got the game-winning hit in the 9th inning to win 1-0. Jon Lester allowed only one hit in eight innings and Roy Halladay allowed five hits in his fourth complete game. The Blue Jays have averaged 2.8 runs/game in Halladay's six starts, compared to 4.7 runs/game when anybody else takes the mound. It shows they can't defeat a No. 1 pitcher. Maybe this team won't be the surprise pick in the American League. Maybe J.P. Riccardi won't get a free pass this time like he has in other years when his team underachieves.

Hey Johan how about we start keeping the ball down. Santana is pitching in a ballpark that has been known to be a pitchers park. The dimensions are long and the winds have always been quiet.

I guess somebody forgot to tell Johan because after allowing two solo home runs tonight to Nate McLouth and Jason Bay, the Mets ace has given up seven home runs in his six starts. He had the same problem last season. I know it's difficult criticizing one of the best pitchers in baseball but it might hurt him down the stretch or in the postseason.
