Carlos Gomez hits for cycle; Ryan Ludwick on Fire

May 8th 2008 14:53
Twins outfielder Carlos Gomez hit for the cycle Wednesday night. The eighth player in team history and first since Kirby Puckett in 1986. Gomez was able to hit for the cycle in reverse order. He led off the game with a home run, then followed with a triple, double and finally a single in the 9th inning.
The single had to be ruled by the score officials because Gomez hit the ball up the middle and deflected off right-hander Ehren Wasserman's glove to shortstop Alexei Ramirez. Ramirez fielded the ball and threw slightly wild to first base, but it looked like Gomez would have beaten the throw. The Twins won the game 13-1. Clearly this shows the Mets gave up too much for Santana. They should have traded .218 hitter Carlos Beltran and left Gomez out in centerfield. Oh wait I forgot Beltran makes a little over $18 million/year so I don't think the Twins would want that contract. I don't think anybody would for that production.

Cardinals outfielder Ryan Ludwick is playing well this season. He is hitting an impressive .356 and went 6-8 the last two nights with a HR, two doubles and three RBI. He has a seven-game hit streak and making a case to see more playing time. Chris Duncan is only batting .253 with 2 HR and 6 RBI. He has already struck out 18 times in 75 at-bats so he would most likely be the outfielder being replaced. If Ludwick is a free agent in your fantasy league, I would sign him and leave him on the bench until he is in the lineup on a regular basis. If he continues to hit like this Tony La Russa will have no choice but to play him.

According to the Arizona Republic, Brandon Webb and the Diamondbacks are negotiating a long term contract. "Yeah, some progress has been made," Webb said. "We've been talking a little bit more. We've made some headway. We'll see where it goes." Webb is signed through 2009 with a 2010 option.

Giants pitcher Barry Zito is now 0-7 after losing Wednesday night to the Pirates 3-1. He was able to work out of a few jams early on but allowed two home runs.

Does Bruce Bochy demote him again to the bullpen but what type of role would he have? If he can't get anybody out as a starter, how is he going to be as a relief pitcher. If you were Bruce Bochy what would you do with your so called ace pitcher?

IMPRESSIVE PERFORMANCES

Tigers second baseman Placido Polanco went 5-5, including the walk-off hit, to help the comeback victory, 10-9, against the Red Sox. The team had 18 hits, 16 of them were singles. Polanco has been very consistent in his career. He is not going to hit home runs or even drive in runs, but expect a high batting average and runs scored. Consider putting him on the radar and trading for the veteran second baseman in your fantasy league.

Reds rookie first baseman Joey Votto had three of the team's seven home runs to defeat the Cubs 9-0.
