Cubs Win; Joba makes First Start; Pedro Returns

The Cubs won their ninth straight game Tuesday night defeating the Padres, 9-6. Alfonso Soriano, Geovany Soto and Mark DeRosa each had home runs. This was their eight consecutive come-from-behind win and 20th of the season. The Cubs have the best record in baseball at 38-21 and the nine-game winning streak is the longest since 2001. Even when they lose, they are still in each game. In the series against the Pirates in Pittsburgh, the Cubs were leading two of the three games late but couldn't hold on. They are getting contributions from everybody on the roster and finding ways to win games.
Yankees pitcher Joba Chamberlain makes his first career start but they lose 9-3 against the Blue Jays. Chamberlain was relieved in the third inning after throwing 62 pitches. Manager Joe Girardi and the Yankees decided to pencil Chamberlain in for 65 pitches for his first start but they didn't expect him to throw 38 of those pitches in the first inning.
That forced the bullpen into the game earlier than expected and usually that isn't a good sign, especially when it's your bullpen against Roy Halladay. In the long run this might benefit the Yankees but right now this transition is hurting the team. They don't have a reliable late-inning relief pitcher and they have such a strict pitch count on Chamberlain that they are more worried about over using the prospect than actually winning the game.
Mets pitcher Pedro Martinez returned from the disabled list Tuesday night and helped defeat the Giants 9-6. Martinez pitched six innings, allowing three runs and seven hits. He also went 2-for-3 with an RBI and run scored. The Mets scored eight runs in the fifth inning, including a three-run double for Damion Easley. This was his first start since his hamstring injury he suffered over two months ago. He should give the Mets a much needed boost by limiting the amount of innings pitched by the bullpen and having a positive attitude in the clubhouse. His presence should help the Mets make a push in the NL East.
