Ervin Santana Stays Perfect; Max Scherzer Struggles
May 6th 2008 13:52
Diamondbacks pitcher Max Scherzer didn't have much success in his first career start as he did in his relief debut last week when he retired all 13 batters faced. Scherzer allowed five runs, two earned, on seven hits over four innings. The Phillies had a combined 17 hits and scored 11 runs. His fastball was clocked in the mid-90s and there was some movement on the pitches but he struggled with his slider and changeup. The command wasn't there and the Phillies made him pay. His next start is scheduled for Saturday against the Cubs. It will be another test for Scherzer with the lineup he is going to face.
Angels pitcher Ervin Santana stays perfect on the season after throwing a complete game shutout Monday against the Royals. He struck out a season-high nine batters and walked none in the 4-0 win. Santana is 6-0 with a 2.02 ERA. Last season his ERA was 5.76. What a difference a year makes.
I am a fan of aggressive base running and I was excited when I watched Albert Pujols win the game with his legs instead of his bat. He broke to third with Rick Ankiel at the plate and decided to take the turn and head home after Ankiel tapped a soft grounder to second base. Rockies second baseman Jonathan Herrera threw to first for the second out, and Todd Helton threw to the plate but just missed Pujols. Jason Isringhausen shut down the Rockies in the bottom of the ninth to win 6-5.
