Griffey Hits 600; Pitchers Can't Field Position; Rays Sting Angels
June 10th 2008 14:55
Congratulations to Ken Griffey Jr. for hitting his 600th home run. He becomes the fifth player, I mean 6th player all-time, to hit 600 home runs.
It's still very difficult to put Barry Bonds in that class. A player that should have an asterisk next to his name should not be included. Griffey missed significant playing time between 2001-04 so most likely he would have past Hank Aaron for the all-time home run record. Alex Rodriguez would have been chasing Griffey Jr. instead of Bonds.
The last few nights I have noticed that many pitchers can not field their position. I have seen a handful of throws to second base go into center field. Bartolo Colon had an error in Friday night's Red Sox game and Angels pitcher Darren O'Day threw a routine double play into center field last night against the Rays. Randy Johnson didn't even make the throw to second base in a double play attempt Monday versus the Pirates because he was so concerned about turning the double play that he didn't field the groundball cleanly. He dropped the ball and everybody was safe. Pitchers have enough time to set themselves and make the throw to second base to turn the double play. The majority of the time the ball gets hits hard back to the pitcher so he has the most time than any other positional player.
The Rays won the first of a three-game series Monday against the Angels. Evan Longoria went 3-for-4 with two home runs, a double and four RBIs to help the offense explode for a 13-4 victory. Longoria leads all American League rookies with 10 home runs. Dioner Navarro added two doubles and a home run and Carl Crawford went 2-for-4, with an RBI and two stolen bases. Vladimir Guerrero went 4-for-4 with a double and a run scored. Tonight James Shields (4-4, 3.64 ERA) will start for the Rays while the Angels start Jered Weaver (5-6, 4.79 ERA)
