Indians Starters Scoreless Streak; Mets poor baserunning
May 15th 2008 20:31
The Indians starters scoreless streak ended Thursday at 44 1/3 consecutive innings. Aaron Laffey allowed an unearned run in the second innings against the Athletics. It was the only run Laffey allowed and they were able to win 4-2. The streak was the longest in the Majors since 1974 when the Orioles' Jim Palmer, Mike Cueller, Dave McNally and Ross Grimsley worked 54 straight scoreless innings. The Indians won six of seven games during the homestand and now they travel to Cincinnati to begin the three-game Ohio series against their rival.
Today the Brewers announced the signing of Ryan Braun to an eight year/$45 million contract. The highest contract in franchise history. He becomes the third prospect to sign a long term deal after the Rockies locked up Troy Tulowitzki to a seven-year deal over the winter and the Rays signed Evan Longoria to a six-year deal. These small market teams are securing the future of the organization and eliminating arbitration. It's important to lock up the youth of the franchise and build around these players.
Jim Edmonds played in his first game in a Cubs uniform today and it happened to be against the team that released him last week. He was 1-4 with a strikeout.
Poor baserunning causes Mets to lose to the Nationals, 1-0. The Mets had two opportunities to score in the eight and ninth inning but they had baserunning blunders. Jose Reyes tried to go from first to third on a sacrifice bunt by Luis Castillo but was tagged out at third after they threw Castillo out at first. Then in the ninth inning, Carlos Beltran was doubled-off third base after Carlos Delgado hit a line-drive to first. Beltran was halfway down the line so not sure where he was going. That was how the game ended. Mike Pelfrey was denied the franchise's first no-hitter after Aaron Boone broke it up in the seventh inning.
