Instant Replay in Baseball
May 22nd 2008 15:03
Last night I was fortunate enough to watch the Yankees defeat the Orioles, 8-0, at Yankee Stadium. It was the first time I went to the stadium in the Bronx since 2003. Alex Rodriguez went 3-4 with a double, home run and two runs batted in.
The double was actually a home run but the umpires missed the call because the ball hit the yellow stairs behind the right field wall and bounced back into play. My seats were located on the first base line in right field so our section had a great view and it was obvious it went over the fence. I actually thought it hit the sign next to the stairs so I was close but it was tough to tell because it went out so fast. The same issue occurred Sunday when Mets first baseman Carlos Delgado hit the foul pole at Yankee Stadium and the umpire called it a foul ball.
In those situations baseball should have instant replay. Leave the rest of the calls to the umpire's judgement but use the replay if they have to determine home runs. The new technology would not hurt the game and might become useful someday in the postseason if there is a home run call that affects the outcome of a playoff or World Series game.
