Max Scherzer Makes Debut
April 30th 2008 17:55
Diamondbacks prospect pitcher Max Scherzer made his major league debut Tuesday against the Astros. He retired all 13 batters he faced, striking out seven, in 4.1 innings of relief. He hit 98 mph on the radar gun. Before being called up, Scherzer pitched 23 innings for Triple-A Tucson and had 38 strikeouts and only three walks. According to general manager Josh Byrnes, they plan to use Scherzer in the bullpen intially but will be a long-term starter. There is a chance he could take over Edgar Gonzalez's spot in the rotation after he struggled yesterday. If he contributes this season pencil the Diamondbacks in for the National League title. They would have Webb, Haren, Owings, Johnson and now Scherzer. If they decide to keep him in the bullpen they could shorten games by having Scherzer pitch the 7th inning, Tony Pena pitching the 8th and Brandon Lyon closing it out in the 9th.
National P Chad Cordero is headed back to the disabled list with a strained muscle below his throwing shoulder. He is going to be on and off the disabled list for the majority of season. Don't expect much from the Nationals closer.
Rockies shortstop Troy Tulowitzki suffers a strained quad and expected to go on the disabled list. Clint Barmes will take over at shortstop and Omar Quintanilla will be called up to play second base.
Rumor has it John Smoltz might be headed to the bullpen once he returns from the disabled list and become the team's closer. He has been complaining of shoulder and neck problems since spring training so a few weeks of rest and possibly throwing less pitches when he comes back could help the future Hall of Famer.
In a rehap start with Triple-A, Cardinals pitcher Mark Mulder allowed nine runs, seven earned, in 3.2 innings pitched. He also gave up three home runs. No timetable set for his return to the majors.
