Miserable Mets
June 13th 2008 14:46
This stretch has been frustrated for the Mets players, coaches, management and the fans. Willie Randolph said in a news conference at the beginning of the week that he has never been this frustrated in all his years in baseball.
The Mets have lost six of the last seven games, including Thursday when they let a 4-0 lead slip away to the Diamondbacks. Johan Santana pitched seven scoreless innings with 10 strikeouts. Randolph handed the game over to the bullpen and they lost the lead AGAIN. Joe Smith allowed two runs in the eight inning and Billy Wagner blew his second save in as many nights when he allowed two more runs in the ninth to knot the game at 4. Aaron Heilman relieved Wagner in the 10th inning and he let the eventual game-winning run score on Miguel Montero's sacrifice fly.
This was the sixth time the Mets lost the lead during this stretch. On Wednesday they were winning 3-0 before Wagner allowed a three-run home run to Mark Reynolds in the ninth inning, but won it in the 13th inning with a Carlos Beltran walk-off home run. They blew a 5-1 lead Tuesday and also lost the lead in three games in the previous series to the Padres. A 5-3 lead Sunday and a 1-0 lead on Thursday and Friday night. They currently have 17 consecutive shutout innings by the starters but have allowed 15 runs in the last 12 innings by the relievers.
This team is just overrated. They have a bunch of superstars that are just past their prime. This losing streak is not completely the bullpens fault. The team is not taking advantage of their opportunities to have big innings. For example in the eight inning of Thursday's game, David Wright popped out to first base with the bases loaded and Carlos Beltran followed with a fly out to left field to end the inning. Wright just had to hit a fly ball and the Mets would have had a 5-0 lead going to the eight inning instead of a 4-0 lead. The lineup is just weak and Omar Minaya has to be blamed. He is signing these 30-plus year old players to long term deals. Mets fans be prepared to see Luis Castillo in a Mets uniform for a long time because he was signed to a four-year deal. There is no prospects or anything to look forward to in years to come. These players are just cashing their checks and not doing their job. They are legally stealing from the Mets organization. They don't care about winning. The Mets should start paying their fans to come to games because the five dollar upper deck seats are not worth the money to watch poor fundamental baseball. Why should the fans care if they don't?
