Pitching dominated Wednesday's action as five shutouts were thrown. Barry Zito, Jair Jurrjens, Brian Bannister, Johnny Cueto, and Dan Haren each started a game where their opponent was shut out. Haren threw seven shutout innings, allowing six hits and striking out nine. Cueto allowed four hits, striking out three in seven innings, Bannister allowed four hits in six innings and Jurrjens allowed six hits in seven-plus innings. Zito had his best outing since his days in an Oakland uniform and pitching seven scoreless innings, allowing six hits and striking out five. There has been 29 shutouts already this season. According to Elias Sports Bureau, the record for the most shutouts in a day was eight and that occurred on June 4, 1972.
