Shawn Chacon Released After Scuffle with GM

On Thursday pitcher Shawn Chacon was put on waivers and will be released, without pay, if not signed by another team. This comes after Chacon was suspended indefinitely by the team, possibly stemming from an altercation he had with general manager Ed Wade.
According to multiple sources, Wade and manager Cecil Cooper attempted to meet with Chacon before the game to discuss the decision the organization made at the beginning of the week to move Chacon to the bullpen. The conversation turned into a heated argument and scuffle between Chacon and Wade. Chacon told the Houston Chronicle that he threw Wade to the ground.
"He started yelling and cussing," Chacon told the Chronicle. "I'm sitting there and I said to him very calmly, 'Ed, you need to stop yelling at me. Then I stood up and said, 'You better stop yelling at me.' I stood up. He continued and was basically yelling and stuff and was like, 'You need to ... look in the mirror.' So at that point I lost my cool and I grabbed him by the neck and threw him to the ground. I jumped on top of him because at that point I wanted to beat his ... Words were exchanged."
According to Chacon, players came in and separated the two.
He has shown his displeasure for being moved to the bullpen. Chacon expressed to Houston media outlets that he wants to be traded instead of pitching out of the bullpen. He was 2-0 with a 4.75 ERA in May, but since then he has gone 0-3 with an ERA of 9.35. The team needed to make changes after being 6-15 in June going into tonight's game versus the Rangers.
This was an unprofessional act by Chacon even if Wade was getting heated during the conversation. Everybody should look out for themselves but Chacon should understand he has struggled this month and a demotion to the bullpen is better than being designated for assignment. He has to look in the mirror and realize he is 45-61 in his career with a 4.99 ERA. The Astros were his fourth team since joining the major leagues in 2001 and he has pitched out of the bullpen before and had success. He recorded 35 saves in 44 opportunities with the Rockies in 2004 and last season was 5-4 with a 3.94 ERA with the Pirates. Chacon will get an opportunity with another team because of his name but he will never get a multi-year deal. If I was a general manager in a playoff race I wouldn't sign the eight-year veteran.
