Smoltz needs Surgey; Brett Myers Flirts with No-Hitter
June 5th 2008 13:55
Reds defeat Phillies, 2-0
Phillies pitcher Brett Myers lost his no-hitter in the seventh inning and eventually the game. Joey Votto broke up the no-hitter when he hit a two-out double, which scored Brandon Phillips, who walked and stole second earlier in the inning. Reds pitcher Edinson Volquez was just as dominant. He threw seven scoreless innings, allowing two hits and striking out eight. He lowered his ERA from 1.46 to 1.32. The two teams finish their four-game series today at 1:00 ET.
Braves pitcher John Smoltz will undergo season-ending shoulder surgery. He made the decision after making a relief appearance on Monday against the Marlins and feeling discomfort. He actually has been pitching with discomfort since his last 20 starts last season. Smoltz plans to have the surgey so he can pitch again but this could be the end of a great career if the only option is retirement. The 41-year-old pitcher recorded 3,011 strikeouts, 210 wins and a 3.26 ERA in his 20-year career. When he decides to end his career, Smoltz will join the elite in Cooperstown.
