Sunday's Action

May 12th 2008 13:54
Maybe the Diamondbacks are beatable. The Cubs swept the D-backs Sunday, 6-4, on a Daryle Ward two-run double in the eight inning. This was a rematch of last season's NLDS and could be a preview of this season's NLCS. Both teams are in first place in their divisions. The D-backs are a .500 team on the road so the inconsistent weather in April and May could be affecting them when they leave the dome. They are actually 6-10 when they play teams outside the NL West and 17-5 in division play. Is the NL West that weak and is this going to be an issue for the D-backs in October? They actually didn't lose any ground this weekend because the second place Dodgers also were swept by the Astros this weekend and have lost four straight games. The D-backs come home this week to play the Rockies on Tuesday night.

The two longest current winning streaks are held by the Pittsburgh Pirates and the first place Florida Marlins. The Pirates swept the Giants during the week and then defeated the Braves Friday and Saturday night before being rained out Sunday. They rescheduled Sunday's game for this afternoon at 12:35 ET as part of a doubleheader. Zach Duke is pitching for the Pirates while the Braves are countering with Jair Jurrjens in the first game. They are now only 4 1/2 games back from first place.

The Marlins just keep on winning. They have won seven straight games and are an impressive 11-5 on the road. Dan Uggla had two home runs and Jeremy Hermida had another one to defeat the Nationals, 5-4, Sunday. This week they swept the Nationals and Brewers and will begin a four-game series tonight on the road against the Reds. The Reds have the second-worst record in the National League so the Marlins should keep on rolling.

Mets outfielder Carlos Beltran hit his third home run this season and had a double Sunday to help the Mets defeat the Reds 8-3. Beltran should consider using the pink bat all season but it might not be the bat. He was 4-8 with 8 RBI in the last two games and batting .323 in May.

D-backs just might be for real, but it's always good to see the cubbies win.

Nice article
