Whacky day for O'Day
April 23rd 2009 16:57
Darren O'Day had a whirlwind of a day that started in Panama City Beach, FL and finished the day allowing the game-winning hit to Blue Jays' Kevin Millar in the 11th inning in Toronto.
O'Day was sitting in Florida waiting to clear waivers after the Mets designated him for assignment. He got a call from his agent Wednesday to tell him he was claimed by the Rangers, so he went to the airport and boarded a plane to Memphis, and transferred flights to Toronto to join the team. He arrived in Toronto around 9:45 ET, about the eight inning, and the original plan was for him to just meet the team at the hotel, but the Rangers were running out of pitchers so they had him go to the ballpark. He got there in the 10th inning and was in the game the following inning, but wearing Kason Gabbard's No. 30 jersey. He was on the big league roster, but they weren't able to get his jersey in time for the game so he wore Gabbard's jersey, who is currently in Triple-A. Teams carry jerseys for players that might get called up while they are on a road trip. It was an adventurous day for O'Day.
