Willie Randolph Fired
June 17th 2008 21:10
I just returned to the New York area this afternoon and heard the sad news that Willie Randolph was fired as Mets manager, with pitching coach Rick Peterson and first-base coach Tom Nieto. Bench coach Jerry Manuel has assumed the duties as interim mananager.
The Mets organization waited until the team headed west and defeated the Angels, 9-6, Monday. A very unprofessional decision by the Mets to wait until they headed to the west coast to fire the three coaches. They could have made the decision before they flew to the other side of the country and played one game.
Also teams usually fire the manager after losing streaks but the Mets have won three of the last four games. It has been rumored for over a month that his job was in jeopardy. If they intended to fire Randolph, they should have done it back in May instead of delaying the process. They dragged him along and falsely told him his job was not in jeopardy but in fact it was.
All season the team has underachieved and usually when that happens the manager takes the blame. Randolph went this time so Omar Minaya will be the next on the chopping block, which will hopefully happen soon because Minaya is more to blame for this disaster than Randolph. He built this team of overpaid veterans that are past their primes so he should deal with the consequences.
