Yankees Hot Stove
January 11th 2009 14:45
To all my readers I am back. I have some extra time on my hands now so I'm going to blog either everyday or every other day during the off-season. There is always Hot Stove news to discuss.
In the last few years we have realized championships have not been won by the teams spending the most money this time of year, but the Yankees are looking to change that pattern after spending over $200 million on just two pitchers. Then they signed Mark Teixeira to play first base for the next six years. They have had the most active off-season by any team but will it turn into wins on the field?
Yankees general manager Brian Cashman used this same philosophy when he signed Mike Mussina, Jason Giambi, Alex Rodriguez (traded for but could afford), but none of these signing turned into championships. The most successful team in baseball, if not in professional sports, hasn't won a title since 2000 when they defeated the Mets in five games. He took a chance on an injury-proned A.J. Burnett and can't pich well in a playoff game C.C. Sabathia. He had to go after these two top pitchers because of Sabathia's past success and Burnett's potential. It must be tough be Cashman where he just goes out and spends. Not much thinking goes into a general manager job where you have an open wallet and can get anybody. This is not the art of building a team, just reloading. Starting in April we will see if these moves work out for the "Bronx Bombers".
On a side note I had the chance to watch the MLB Network for the first time and I enjoyed it. The show I was watched was called Red Sox Memories where they went through every position and discussed the best Red Sox players at each position. I also saw an advertisement for how they are going to cover the season. They have inserted cameras at each ballpark and will do live look-ins. When the NFL Network was introduced about five years ago I always hoped MLB would come up with their own network and now we have it. I'm looking forward to watching spring training coverage and then when the season starts.
