April 25th 2009 13:26
Red Sox 5 Yankees 4 (11th inn) – Another classic game at Fenway between these two rivalries. The Yankees were in control all game, and the Red Sox couldn’t get out of their own way until the ninth inning. Mariano Rivera was one out away from recording his fifth save, until Jason Bay tied the game with a two-run home run, and then Damaso Marte gave up a walk-off shot to Kevin Youkilis in the 11th inning. Joba Chamberlain allowed two runs, one earned, over five-plus innings. Jon Lester matched Chamberlain pitch-for-pitch, allowing two runs over six innings.

Rangers 5 Orioles 4 – Down one in the ninth inning, Michael Young hit a two-run home run off George Sherrill to take the lead and the eventual win over the Orioles. Ian Kinsler, Hank Blalock and Young each had two hits. Aubrey Huff stayed hot, going 2-for-4 with two RBIs. Koji Uehara pitched six-plus innings, allowing two runs on four hits.

Phillies 7 Marlins 3 – After being shutout for eight innings, the Phillies exploded in the ninth inning scoring seven runs, including Shane Victorino’s grand slam, to defeat the Marlins. Josh Johnson pitched seven innings, allowing three hits and striking out eight, but Matt Lidstrom couldn’t shut down the Phillies and ruined Johnson’s impressive start. He allowed the seven runs over four hits and three walks. Dan Uggla had a three-run home run in the first inning.

Padres 4 Pirates 3 (11 inn) – Former Pirates outfielder Brian Giles wins the game for the Padres in the 11th inning on a two-out walk-off single. Andy LaRoche tied the game in the sixth inning with a single, but they were not able to push another run across the plate. Adrian Gonzalez hit his sixth home run of the season.

Giants 5 D’backs 1 – Tim Lincecum fans 12 in eight innings for the victory. Bengie Molina broke the game open with a two-run double in the seventh inning and Edgar Renteria hit a solo home run in the first inning.

Cardinals 4 Cubs 3 – Albert Pujols singled in the eight inning and stole a base that eventually lead to the game-winning run after Ryan Ludwick singled. Carlos Marmol allowed the game-winning run before leaving with an injury. Adam Wainwright allowed only one earned run over seven innings, striking out six. Aaron Heilman pitched another scoreless inning, dropping his ERA to 0.93 on the season.
